Super interesting! I never knew of the Jaffa cakes before visiting the UK. I went to Jaffa, once. I found it had the same vibes of Marseille, Tarifa, and Trapani.
Some say Jaffa was founded after the Flood by (and derives its name from) Japheth, one of Noah’s sons. His name in Hebrew has connotations of beauty and exceptionality, a good name for a very special orange.
This might also explain the term ‘a jaffa’ for an exceptionally well bowled ball in cricket that outwits the batsman. They say that this cricket term originated in Australia or New Zealand where cricket and Jaffa oranges enjoy great popularity.
Mind you jaffa is also used in cockney slang as a derogatory term associated with yet another well known characteristic of that famous orange, but we won’t go into that here!
Thank you for the interesting post, I had never really thought about Jaffa and was unaware of the history.

I've never been. Would love to go.
Not the exact moment to go right now but I hope one day one will be able to be back. And who knows, with more oranges.
