Queens will be lifted in the first week of July on my small plot. I’m already dreaming of ‘balls of flour’.

I am looking forward to buying those new potatoes on the Kerry highways and byways. Butter, salt and parsley. Scrumptious 😋 😍

I forgot to say parsley!

Last night we had the first new potatoes ( not queens) with mackerel. So good! My Irish allotment neighbour introduced me to queens and they are very special.

Living on a mountain in the Catskills in upstate New York has made me appreciate the potato and its many varieties as I never had before. Growing our own food and living off the land is why I came here—fifteen years ago.

I found a local grower, Tucker Farm, to be sure my seed potatoes would be of the same terroir, so-to-speak. My fear was the mountain clay soil would be difficult to prevent disease. What a joy it was to find that 4 varieties easily flourished!

This is such a delight to read, to learn how potatoes grow there and how they are so loved.
