Excellent article, Jp. I carried the tradition of making soda bread (brown bread) for my Father after my mother Eileen (your paternal grandmother) passed on in 1998. As I was working full time and buttermilk wasn’t as easy to come by I used Bextartar (Cream of Tartar) instead. The resultant loaf/cake was enjoyed by all.

My Irish grandmother made soda bread regularly and other Irish cousins did as well.

The fun part was the different breads the inlaws made versus the standard the maternal branch made.
